THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING THE LEARNING PATTERNS IN STUDENTS
The basic principle of teaching is to understand and respect the different learning methodologies adopted by students. Each student is different in approaching and solving a problem. It's the same thing that happens in the case of a subject, too. It is therefore very important to understand the learning patterns followed by the students.
Each student develops his or her learning style based on his or her taste and environment. Four components of student learning are important, based on the theoretical background of student learning patterns.
- Cognitive processing strategies: Processing strategies are those combinations of cognitive learning activities that students employ to process subject matter and that directly lead to knowledge, understanding and skill.
- Metacognitive regulation strategies: These strategies are those combinations of metacognitive learning activities that students use to plan, monitor steer and evaluate their cognitive learning process and which indirectly lead to learning outcomes.
- Conceptions of learning: These are the metacognitive views and beliefs students hold about learning, teaching and related phenomena.
- Learning motivations or orientations: Learning motivations or orientations encompass the aims, goals, motives and worries of students about their studies and they represent the motivational -affective component of the model.
For a better learning, students should be trained in the right path. The major learning patterns which a teacher should train their students must include the following aspects.
- 1.Clear direction: A student always carry a clear direction about what he/she going to learn.
- 2.Planning: They will have always clear planning about the methodologies they are going to adapt during the learning process, the resources they are going to depend, the time they are going to spend, the neatness they are going to keep during the learning process, the authenticity of the data they are going to collect like that.
- 3.Questioning and critical thinking: Questioning and critical thinking are the major two characters a student must develop, these are the backbone of a learning process. A student should approach a problem through a questioning attitude, these questions regarding every aspect of that problem will help them to understand and acquire enough knowledge. And on this basis, they can find a solution/ idea using their imagination and intelligence.
- 4.Real-world experience & relevance: Learning will only complete when the students who can apply what they learned in their life into real-life problems if they succeed in solving them we can say that they are successfully learned what they needed. For that it’s important to make them familiar with real-world experiences, swimming can’t be unless one enter in the water and try to swim. Like that practical experience is as important as theoretical learning.
- 5.Use own ideas & imagination: Learning something which forefathers found out is very easy, there is no much stress or pressure but to learn something new and find something productive will only be possible if the students use their ideas and imagination. World’s bright future depends on the ideas and imagination of the younger generation. Just look around everything, which is manmade is the result of someone’s idea and imagination.
For a better tomorrow, we should help our kids to think better and create better!
